As reported earlier, the Hafenkran (Zürich’s art installation of a dock crane on the Limmat River) must fly away, and the time has come. Apparently when it arrived last April (to much discussion and consternation), there was a festival with fire-eaters and jugglers and such. I can’t attest to that, but as I watched a bit of the dismantling yesterday, I didn’t see any such signs of rejoicing or partying.
I did read in 20 Minuten that despite the disdain for the bird, people have been itching to get a piece of it as a souvenir. One can request a screw or plate by email, or try their luck finding it on a nearby bridge, but I suspect all available pieces have been spoken for already. The larger sections will be sold for scrap.
The irony that it takes a crane to dismantle a crane was not lost on us as we walked by.
