Labor Day

On 1 May 2015 I did not leave the apartment. I’d heard that the protests might get violent. It was also rainy.

Labor Day 2023 was also rainy. After a trip to a coffee shop, we remembered that the grocery stores would be closed for this holiday. Eleven of Switzerland’s cantons consider May Day/Labor Day a holiday.

Of course, the train stations have stores open on most holidays, so we went to Stadelhofen. After we had purchased provisions for the day, we walked to our tram stop. The sign said that our tram would not be coming. We heard drumming. The beginning of the parade was headed our way. We wanted to see a bit of it.

In Zurich the rally was staged under the theme of the Iranian movement “Woman, Life, Freedom”. The blue sign says “Women’s Work is Worth More.”

Here are some of the participants.

When we saw these police officers (and many more), we decided it was time to go home. Our tram had been rerouted, but close by.

Apparently there was some violence later in the afternoon with the arrest of 11 people.
